Plot summary
In 1829, Nikolay Gogol works as a clerk in the Third Section of the imperial chancellery in St. Petersburg, where his seizures come with visions and pages of words that mean nothing to him. Investigator Yakov Petrovich Guro watches one of the fits and recognizes the scribbles as clues. When Guro is sent to the Poltava province to look into the murders of girls near Dikanka, Gogol asks to come along as his assistant and clerk. In the village, the locals and the district investigator, Alexander Khristoforovich Binh, give the two no help, and the killings are blamed on a figure called the Dark Horseman. Gogol also meets Alexey Danishevsky, a landowner who keeps to himself with his wife, Elizaveta.
