Plot summary
Night-time Petersburg draws young drivers who race through its streets, among them Stepan, just back from the army, and Doker, who now owns the auto shop that belonged to Stepan's father and organizes the racing. For the racers, speed is a way of life that brings together people of very different kinds, though the rules one man follows mean nothing to another. Stepan's father Mokhov earns his living as an auto mechanic, and Katya, the daughter of Lieutenant Colonel Stepanchenko, is Doker's girlfriend, the woman Stepan falls for. Some of the drivers have decided there is easy money to be made from the same nights.
