Plot summary
In Dikanka, a scribe named Nikolai Gogol is ordered to investigate a series of murders: eleven young women killed by a figure the villagers call the Dark Horseman. Gogol's seizures bring him macabre visions, and the closer the case comes the more often they visit him. The villagers fear a sorcerer, Basavryuk, who arrives in Dikanka and is said to hunt the souls of Christians; the priest tells Gogol to keep away from him. Gogol learns that the next victim is meant to be Liza, the woman he loves, and he doubts he can protect her. A witch hunter, Khoma Brut, comes to Dikanka to fight the demon Viy.
