Plot summary
Johnny Saxby lives on the family sheep farm in Yorkshire with his father, Martin, and his grandmother, Deirdre. Since Martin's stroke and with Deirdre elderly, most of the daily work falls to Johnny, who spends his free time binge drinking and meeting men in secret. After he returns late from one such encounter, Martin berates him because a calf nearly died in a breech birth, and has him shoot it instead of calling a veterinarian. Gheorghe Ionescu, a Romanian migrant worker, is hired for the lambing season and given a caravan on the farm. Because the ewes have moved away from the farmhouse and a boundary wall is still unrepaired, Johnny and Gheorghe camp near the flock, where Gheorghe revives a weak newborn lamb that Johnny was ready to let die, and warns Johnny not to call him a gypsy.
