Plot summary
Jerzy, a Polish director, is shooting a film on a studio set: a series of tableaux vivants recreated from classical European paintings and set to classical music, and he has no story to tell. His producer, László, grows impatient while Jerzy delays and cancels shoots, blaming the lighting. Hanna, a German, runs the hotel where the crew stays, and her husband Michel owns the factory where Isabelle works. Isabelle, a young floor worker with a stutter, is fired and tries to rally her fellow workers into a strike for their sake. The crew recruits factory hands as extras for the tableaux, and Isabelle asks them why films never show people at work. Jerzy has shot test footage with Hanna and wants her in the film.
