Trailer

Plot summary

Potter is a young craftsman living in the City of Masters, where he has just opened a pottery shop alongside his friend Padlock and Ginger, the girl he is betrothed to. Work comes slowly, and he doubts he will ever manage the repair of the city fountain he has long wanted to carry out. Then he comes upon Flint, a tinderbox holding the Stone of Fire: strike it for a spark, and a wish is granted, with a gold dog summoned to carry the wish out. Word that the artifact has been awakened reaches the Queen, who wants it in her hands, and she turns against Potter. Ginger, full of energy and warmth, is not willing to leave her friend to face this alone.

Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Ginger's Tale (2020)

Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.

  • The film's failure closed Vverh Animation Studio: it earned about 21.4 million rubles ($310,076) against a production budget of 250 million rubles (~$3.3 million).
  • The story began at a team meeting where the writers decided to make a film about love, but a bag of money sitting nearby turned it into a story about love and money.
  • The film keeps Hans Christian Andersen's tinderbox dogs — one strike summons a copper dog with copper coins, twice a silver dog, three times a gold dog — but changes the magic, granting money instead of any desire.
  • Ginger's Tale uses a "conveyor" system unlike other animated films, assigning small details of the animation frames to members of different art groups.
  • The character Firefighter was cast to fit voice actor Edgard Zapashny so well that his lines were rewritten, and the role became Zapashny's first dubbing job for an animated film.
  • The film's song-and-dance numbers were animated under theater choreographer Irina Kashuba by transferring the movements of real dancers to the drawn characters.
