Plot summary
Jim and Julie, a couple from the United States, fly to Thailand for a vacation. At the airport they hire Gogo, a courteous driver, who shows them Bangkok and tells them about the spirit houses, miniature dwellings where ghosts are said to live without harming the living. Jim proposes to Julie with an engagement ring. In the hotel lobby they meet Robert and Billy, two British travelers who invite them out to celebrate. Robert takes Jim to a nightspot while Billy stays outside with Julie. Julie and Jim argue, and she accepts Robert's offer of a drive to the spirit houses on the city's outskirts. Robert ties Julie's scarf around a doll's neck before he and Billy drive off, leaving the couple stranded.
