Plot summary
On Halloween morning Garfield is woken by Binky the Clown on television and realizes the holiday has arrived. Wanting candy, he convinces Odie that dogs must trick-or-treat with cats and hand over nearly all their candy, keeping one piece for the dog. Odie is tempted by that single piece, and the two go up to the attic, where an old trunk holds costumes they consider. Garfield settles on pirates for them both. That evening they join the neighborhood children out trick-or-treating.

- Jim Davis wanted the special to open on a familiar note and then "go somewhere that would at least scare 4-year-olds".
- Producer Lee Mendelson cast C. Lindsay Workman as the old man's voice, hunting for a deep voice; Workman had voiced Garfield's grandfather in Garfield on the Town.
- The animation was done in Indiana, where Davis says animators aimed for a "swirly, cross-dissolve" effect for the ghosts, plus a glowing look.
- The special's 1986 Primetime Emmy for Outstanding Animated Program was the third won by a Garfield special; the only other nominee that year was another Garfield special, Garfield in Paradise.
