Plot summary
Dick Harper works as an aerospace engineer at Taft Aerospace, and he and his wife Jane live in a suburban house with their son Billy. When the aerospace industry declines, Dick's boss Charlie Blanchard fires him. The family's new swimming pool sits unfinished, a landscape crew repossesses the new lawn, and the Harpers still owe $77,000 on the house. They have no savings and no life insurance, having lived beyond their means. Jane finds work doing fashion modeling in a department store, but a show there goes badly wrong. Dick invites a man from another aerospace company to lunch at home, hoping to be hired, and the landscape contractor turns up outside with a megaphone, demanding the indoor plants back. Dick also tries to collect unemployment insurance and food stamps.
