Plot summary
New at Bridgeport High School for senior year, Sam Leonard is humiliated on his first day by the jock Kyle Plunkett. He makes friends with Annie Dray and falls for Vicki Sanders, who is going out with Kyle. A guidance counselor tells him that lying is how to win classmates over, so Sam claims a Porsche, a rock star father, a dog that ate his homework, a perfect jump shot, and the attentions of his English teacher, Mrs. Moran, and of Vicki. One argument with his parents ends with a broken mirror on his bedroom door, and the following morning all of it is real.
