Plot summary
Thoko, Aninka and Sophie live together in a house in Johannesburg while apartheid governs South Africa, and each of them faces the system from a different position in that society. Thoko is a Black schoolteacher, and her resistance takes the form of non-violent passive protest. Aninka is an Afrikaner archeologist who has turned against the pro-apartheid politics of her family. Sophie comes from a British family and works as a librarian, and she secretly belongs to an anti-apartheid organization. That group has her plant bombs in public places, and she tells the two women she lives with nothing about it.
