Plot summary
Fifteen-year-old Paul Harrison is English and lives in Paris with his father, a wealthy businessman who neglects him. Michelle Latour is fourteen, French, and an orphan; she has recently come to Paris to stay with her cousin, and she finds the situation at her cousin's apartment in Montmartre unwholesome. The two become friends, and since neither of them is content in the place where they are meant to live, they choose to leave. Michelle has a small cottage in the marshlands of the Camargue; she used to go there with her father, an artist who died not long before. Paul and Michelle set off for it and settle into the house.

- Director Lewis Gilbert turned down The Godfather because Paramount would not give him enough budget, and instead pitched a three-part love-story project to Robert Evans; Evans suggested making just the young couple's story, and Gilbert agreed.
- Lewis Gilbert took a 50% share of the film's gross after it made two and a half times its cost, turning down all takings from England and Japan instead of a percentage.
- The two leads were found after extensive screen testing, and Lewis Gilbert wanted to cast Isabelle Adjani for the first but could not get her.
