Plot summary
Frances Price, a Manhattan heiress, has almost nothing left years after the death of her husband Franklin. The bank seizes her property, so she sells the contents of her house and crosses the Atlantic by ship with her son Malcolm, bound for a small apartment in Paris that belongs to her sister. Her intention had been to die before the money was gone, and now she means to spend her remaining days there quietly. The family cat, Small Frank, travels with them. On the crossing, Malcolm meets Madeleine, a fortune teller. In Paris, Frances befriends her neighbor, Mme. Reynard.
