Plot summary
Sent away by his parents, who hope boarding school will keep him out of trouble, seventeen-year-old Danny Embling arrives at St. Albans, an all-male school in rural New South Wales, in 1965. His stutter and long nose make him the butt of jokes, and his only friend is Gilbert. At a rugby match he notices Thandiwe, whose Ugandan father, a political activist, is lecturing in Canberra while she attends Cirencester Ladies' College across the lake. The two meet again at a debate between the schools and then covertly at a dance, where Thandiwe is caught leaving without permission and given chores by Nicola, a prefect. Thandiwe is befriended by Melissa and Janet, and she and Danny keep meeting under the regulations of both schools and the racial politics that surround her.
