Plot summary
Walter Koontz is a retired security guard in a downtown apartment building who dances the tango at a nightclub and stays in conflict with his neighbor Rusty, a drag queen. When crime boss Mr. Z and two men arrive looking for money Amber's boyfriend took from them, Walt hears gunshots upstairs and climbs the stairs to help. He wakes with one side of his body paralyzed, his speech and posture affected, and a cane needed to walk. Ashamed to be seen in public, he skips therapy until his doctor visits his home, and a physical therapist suggests singing lessons to improve his speech. Rusty wants sex reassignment surgery and lacks the money. Walt comes to him for lessons.
