Plot summary
The Strongs live in Breckenridge, Georgia: fourteen-year-old Connor, his widower father David, and his grandmother Laura. Connor becomes attached to a chestnut colt named Flash that a neighbor has put up for sale, and asks his family about buying the horse. The Strongs are behind on their mortgage payments and have nothing to spare, so Connor finds work at the local grocery store, hoping to earn the $500 price himself. David, troubled by the bills, considers returning to the merchant marines, the job he worked years earlier that pays $25,000, including a $5,000 signing bonus, but which would keep him at sea for five months and would break a promise to his late wife that he would never leave Connor.
