Plot summary
Carmen X says she should not be called Carmen. A string quartet rehearses Beethoven's late quartets, and Claire, one of its members, is a possible love for Joseph. Carmen's uncle Jeannot, a filmmaker, lives in a sanitarium, and his doctor warns that he will be turned out unless he shows signs of genuine illness. Carmen visits him and borrows the apartment he keeps by the sea. She runs with a gang preparing to rob a bank, and during the robbery she meets Joseph, the guard, and the two fall in love at once.

- Isabelle Adjani was originally cast in the title role but left the set after a few days of filming to be with her dying father. Producer Alain Sarde then brought 20-year-old Dutch newcomer Maruschka Detmers, fresh out of acting class with no film experience, to Jean-Luc Godard, who cast her partly for her ease in a nude audition scene.
- Rather than use Bizet's opera music or setting, Jean-Luc Godard relocated his Carmen to contemporary France and made Beethoven's late string quartets a recurring musical element of the film.
