Plot summary
A horse butcher in Paris runs his own shop and raises his daughter Cynthia on his own. She is mute, and his wife left soon after the girl was born, so the care of the child fell to him alone. He washes Cynthia and keeps the shop going, and the days pass in much the same way. Cynthia grows into a teenager, and he still washes her the way he did when she was a baby. He fights the temptation he feels toward her.
