Plot summary
Photojournalist R.J. O'Brien comes to the Amazon basin of Bolivia on assignment for an American magazine, writing about the rain forest. His contact Chato tells him about Rafael Santos, the leader of a rubber tappers' union who has been leading a nonviolent campaign against the corporate cattle ranchers buying up land. Santos has received death threats and is killed at his family home. O'Brien meets Alyssa Rothman of the Rainforest Preservation Society, who worked for Santos. While he is interviewing Mr. Pedrosa about the timber industry, a man fleeing the police, Djamori of the Zingari tribe, seizes him. Officers led by Valdez arrest Djamori and take O'Brien in as well, and Alyssa arrives to bail him out.
