Plot summary
Ryan Billings is twelve and cannot get through a night without lying awake. A doctor has diagnosed him with an acute fear of the dark, and he listens in his bed for whatever he believes is growing stronger in it. His older brother Dale is not convinced. To Dale the whole thing looks like a bid for attention. When their parents drive off to a party, the two are left alone in the house, and Dale promises to keep an eye on his brother. A storm builds outside, the power fails, and the rooms go dark. Ryan is certain that what he has been waiting for has finally come, and Dale tries to calm him.
