Plot summary

Summer 1942. A letter reaches Giorgi Makharashvili, an elderly farmer in Georgia, from his son Goderdzi, who drives a tank at the front. A shot in the shoulder has put the young man in a hospital at Dubovo. Giorgi leaves his grapes and his wife behind and makes the long journey by train and wagon to reach the boy. At the hospital he learns that his son has recovered and that the army has sent him back to the fighting. Giorgi goes on to Domidovo, where he hopes to find him, but the search comes up empty. Rather than return to Georgia, he enlists in the Soviet Army, joining the push west against the Germans, expecting that it will bring him to Goderdzi.
