Plot summary

In pre-revolutionary Georgia, Marita arrives at a village to live with her aunt, and she and Gedia, a poor villager, fall in love. Her relatives and the village elder have a different husband in mind for her, a wealthy man, and are set on the marriage. Around twenty-two stories are woven into the telling, which spans four seasons of life in the village. Among the people around Marita are a man the villagers call an aristocrat and another they call a philosopher, both mocked by local boys, and Elioz, who wanders the snowy forest in search of the magical Tree of Desire.
