Plot summary
Narcotics detective Rita Rizzoli stages undercover buys in costume, and she sets one up with dealer Tito Delgadillo for a new cocaine called Fatal Beauty. She walks away from the deal to pull her informant Charlene out of a beating by her pimp, and Delgadillo disappears with her money into a Chinatown warehouse where the drug is made. Two small-time hoods, Leo Nova and Earl Skinner, raid that warehouse and carry off a batch they do not know is botched. Identifying Delgadillo's body later, Rita finds a second corpse in a van marked Kroll Enterprises. She asks to investigate the owner, Conrad Kroll, but Lieutenant Kellerman turns her down because of Kroll's political ties and her own ruined buy. Kroll's bodyguard, Mike Marshak, handles no drugs himself and considers himself clean.

- During the filming of one scene, United States Secret Service agents mistook the production for a real robbery, which led to the real Los Angeles Police Department storming the set.
- Whoopi Goldberg and Sam Elliott originally filmed a sex scene, but it was cut after poor reactions from test audiences. Both actors alleged the scene had been cut because of anxieties about interracial sex, which the studio denied.
- Cher dropped out of the film to star in Moonstruck instead. MGM/UA had wanted to cast Tina Turner in the role, but director Tom Holland fought for Whoopi Goldberg and got her.
- Brad Dourif's performance as the villain of Fatal Beauty led directly to Holland casting him as Chucky in Child's Play.
- Billy Dee Williams was considered for the role of Mike Marshak in Fatal Beauty before the part was given instead to Sam Elliott.
