Plot summary
For Meghna Mathur, a small-town girl from Chandigarh, the dream is a career as a supermodel in Mumbai. Her father has other plans: he wants her to qualify as a chartered accountant, but she leaves home anyway. Early auditions end in rejection, and she befriends Manav, another struggling model. She meets an old acquaintance, Rohit Khanna, an aspiring designer who assists Vinay Khosla. After a lingerie advertisement pays for her portfolio, her photographs reach a magazine cover, and her Mumbai relatives ask her to move out. She shares an apartment with Manav. At a show staged by Rahul Arora she meets the supermodel Shonali Gujral, Panache's top model. Anisha Roy, an executive there, brings Meghna to Abhijit Sarin, who admires her ambition and confidence and gives her a place in a Vinay Khosla show.

- The Censor Board for Film Certification offered Madhur Bhandarkar a U/A certificate for Fashion only if he made several cuts; he refused and accepted an A certificate instead because the scenes were crucial to the narrative.
- Before the film's release, the Delhi Commission for Women demanded a screening, fearing Kangana Ranaut's character was based on Geetanjali Nagpal, a high-profile model found begging and mentally unbalanced on Delhi's streets in 2007; Bhandarkar's plot summary convinced the commission there was no reference to her.
- Priyanka Chopra initially turned down the lead role of Meghna Mathur, feeling she could not do it justice, and only agreed six months later because of director Madhur Bhandarkar's confidence in her.
