Plot summary
Naina Catherine Kapur studies for an MBA in New York City and lives with her mother Jennifer, her brother Shiv, her adopted sister Jiya and her grandmother Lajjo. Jennifer runs a café with Jaswinder Kapoor, a neighbor, and money is short. Lajjo blames Jennifer and Jiya for the death of her son, Naina's father. When Aman Mathur arrives next door with his mother, his cheerfulness wins over the household. He urges Naina to be happy and suggests the café become an Indian restaurant, which eases the family's finances. Naina falls in love with him, but a secret leads Aman to push her away. Her classmate Rohit, meanwhile, keeps his own feelings for Naina to himself.

- Four days into filming, Shah Rukh Khan fell ill and told Karan Johar he could not continue the project, but Nikhil Advani asked Johar to wait until the actor recovered; Khan's illness lasted six months and stalled the shoot.
- Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor were first offered the roles of Rohit and Naina. Salman declined because he did not want to "play second fiddle", and Kapoor turned the part down over a salary dispute with Karan Johar.

Shah Rukh Khan revealed in 2015 that Karan Johar made a special edit of the film for his children as a favour to him, one in which the film ends before Khan's character Aman dies.- Farida Jalal was offered the role of Jennifer's mother-in-law Lajwanti but declined, because she did not want to appear as Jaya Bachchan's onscreen mother-in-law after starring alongside her in Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham... (2001).
- Jaya Bachchan was initially reluctant to play Jennifer, but changed her mind at once when Nikhil Advani told her he would make the film in the style of Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Gulzar, both her favourite directors.
- Preity Zinta injured herself while shooting the jogging scene that plays over the film's opening credits, so a body double was used for the shot.
