Did you know?!Facts and trivia about Madras Cafe (2013)
Can contain spoilers, watch the movie first.
- Because light machine gun fire was not permitted in India, several of Madras Cafe's civil war scenes were shot in Bangkok, where the production used real AK-47s, 9mm Berettas and M60s after obtaining special permission from the local authorities.
- American-based actress Freida Pinto was initially chosen to portray Jaya Sahni in Madras Cafe, but due to prior commitments she withdrew from the project.
- Unable to shoot in Sri Lanka, the crew recreated the city of Jaffna and large parts of inner Sri Lanka in India, filming most of it in Tamil Nadu and Kerala and converting the locations into a war zone.
- Director Shoojit Sircar said nobody was ready to produce the film because of the sensitivity of its subject, and that three others had already rejected the script before John Abraham and Viacom 18 Motion Pictures backed it.
- Madras Cafe was not released in the United Kingdom and Canada as planned because of protests by the Tamil diaspora over its depiction of Tamil militants, and it also skipped Tamil Nadu, where exhibitors feared the controversy was not worth the risk.
- A petition before the Madurai bench of the Madras High Court claimed that Sri Lankan president Mahinda Rajapaksa had secretly financed the film to justify the human rights violations during the final stages of the war.
- American model-turned-actress Nargis Fakhri was cast as Jaya Sahni, a British journalist in Jaffna, and Madras Cafe became the first film in which her voice was not dubbed.
