Plot summary
Robert Anderson teaches at Wittering College in north London. After a pupil hits him, he must spend three months away from school so the pupil's parents cannot sue over the failing grade he gave. He returns as an alcoholic, separated from his wife Helen, while their daughter Kate studies in one of his classes and shows him little respect. Headmistress Sarah Balham wants him gone, but the National Union of Teachers protects him. After reading about violence at another school, he warns the staff about attacks on teachers. During an after-hours detention with Kate, they argue, he slaps her, and then he notices movement outside and finds the telephone lines dead. A milkshake thrown from outside carries a threatening message, and security guard James seems uninterested. The school then comes under siege by hooded youths.
