Plot summary
Fanny, a young woman, and Meg, a child, have been found by French soldiers, and they tell what happened in 1750. Their settlement turns on its preacher, Will Smythe, accused of affairs with two women: Eloise, whose husband Marion Dalton is away hunting, and Leah, whom the settlers consider insane. The community moves to hang Smythe and Leah, and the rope breaks, sparing Smythe. He leaves with the few settlers who opposed the hanging, among them Jewell and Margaret Buchanan and their daughter Cathleen, and Calvin and his wife Sister, who have their granddaughter Meg with them. They journey downriver to start a settlement of their own. Hostile tribes threaten them along the way. Marion returns home to news of the sentence and the flight, and sets out after the group.

- Writer-director Avery Crounse first screened Eyes of Fire as the 108-minute Crying Blue Sky, then cut 22 minutes after watching it with an audience, releasing an 86-minute version retitled Eyes of Fire.
- Avery Crounse admitted to author Stephen Thrower in 2021 that he cut Eyes of Fire down to something that "didn't necessarily make much sense," because money had to be made.
