Plot summary
In Kingfisher, Oklahoma, the sheriff comes upon Tommy, a teenager with another person's blood on him. The boy is silent, and the sheriff's questions lead him to understand that a woman has been raped and killed. He sets out to find the roots of the crime, and the trail takes him to Ainsley DuPree, a diner waitress, and to Jack Stillings, the man she has just married. In a second thread, Ainsley wrote to Jack while he was in prison, and since his release she has taken him into her home and married him. Jack has become a born-again Christian. The film moves between the two threads.
