Plot summary
Claire Barney works the Los Angeles streets as a parking enforcement officer and shares a small flat with her mother, still recovering from a stroke. On her round she runs into an old flame, who introduces his wife and their ill-behaved daughter; shaken, she steps into the street and a passing vehicle hits her. She is back at work three weeks later, where Jay Caswell, another officer, catches her attention. Jay is blunt and aggressive, fills his hours with a webcam porn site and a phone service, and quarrels with Wilma, a neighbor and delivery driver who parks at the curb to unload. Claire takes an interest in Jay, though almost every exchange between them ends with him storming off over something harmless she has said.

- Cecilia Miniucchi said she based the story on two real encounters: watching a rough, impolite man confront a gentle female parking officer who seemed more scared than anything, and later being ticketed herself by an angry parking officer who was abusing his small authority. She wondered what would happen if two such opposite parking officers met and fell in love.
