Plot summary
Sixteen and eight months pregnant, Mary runs from her mother Meg, a wealthy businesswoman, and her stepfather Phil Cuthbart, a lawyer, who wanted her to end the pregnancy. She lands in a trailer park in a small New Mexico town, where Darnella, a showgirl who lives in the park, befriends her. Also in the park are Annie, an octogenarian pig farmer who carries a gun and is Darnella's neighbor, and Ryder, a teenager who has lived there since his mother lost her job. Doris Dorkus owns the park. Horace Weitzel, a truck driver who loves polka, is Darnella's boyfriend, and Jerry Zee is her agent. Lillian Littlefeather, who calls herself the last of the Kaiyute Indians, owns a casino. Mary's estranged father, the rock star Taylor, is in Los Angeles.
