Plot summary
Caleb Smith works as a programmer for Blue Book, a search engine company, and an office contest earns him a week at the remote, luxurious house of the company's chief executive, Nathan Bateman. Nathan lives there with a servant named Kyoko, who never speaks and, by Nathan's account, knows no English. Caleb signs a non-disclosure agreement without enthusiasm, and then Nathan shows him what he has kept hidden: Ava, a humanoid robot with artificial intelligence. Nathan says Ava has already cleared a basic Turing test, and he wants Caleb to determine whether she can genuinely think and be conscious, and whether Caleb can connect with her even though he knows she is artificial. Ava's body is robotic, with a woman's face and form, and she is kept inside her apartment.

- Ex Machina used no greenscreen or tracking markers: Ava's body was a polyurethane bodysuit dusted with metal powder, with lines on it so VFX company DNEG could digitally erase parts of the costume afterwards.
