Plot summary
Eve Simon works as an advertising executive at Bernstein & Barlow on Madison Avenue, and her life outside the office is thin: her assistant Mandy, her friend since grammar school, and Neil Barlow, the married boss who is also her lover. Neil tells her he will spend Christmas with his wife and children, and Eve, alone on Christmas Eve, thinks back to Scott Gustafson, the fiancé she left in Eastborough, Oregon eight years earlier, and to the internship that began the day after the wedding was to take place. After she wishes on a Christmas star, she wakes on December 19, 1996, at home in Eastborough with her memories of 2004 intact and a wedding to Scott ahead of her. Brother James, her sarcastic guardian angel, arranged the miracle and urges her to marry Scott this time.
