Plot summary
In suburban Chicago, fifteen-year-old Jade Butterfield falls for David Axelrod, seventeen, after her older brother Keith introduces them. The Butterfields are known in their community for a bohemian household, and the couple are free to be together in Jade's room. David's wealthy parents, political activists, take little interest in him. One night Jade's mother Ann finds the two by the fireplace and lives vicariously through their romance, while her father Hugh watches with growing unease. The nightly meetings cost Jade sleep and her grades fall. When she tries to take a sleeping pill from her father's supply and is caught, Hugh tells David to stay away from Jade.
