Plot summary
Amir is a young man in Iran who wants to marry his sweetheart Narges, and the money for their wedding is not there. He signs on with a fisherman along the rugged Caspian Sea coast, hoping the wages from the work will close the gap. The job he takes, though, is not only fishing: the caviar is taken illegally and sold through a black market, and the work pulls Amir into that trade. Piece by piece, a complex hierarchy comes into view, a parallel realm that grows more constricting and oppressive. The relationship between Amir and Narges is endangered as well.

- For Leere Netze, the water scenes were not all shot at sea: because the Caspian Sea there was very rough, some scenes were filmed in a swimming pool and a studio, while others were shot in a real fishing facility.
- Hamid Reza Abbasi made his film debut as Amir in Leere Netze; director Behrooz Karamizade cast him because he wanted someone who seemed untouched and radiated innocence and naivety.
- Director Behrooz Karamizade drew on his regular visits to family in Iran: he saw young people there losing their prospects because inflation, sanctions and social restrictions make it hard even for the well-educated to realize their dreams, and early marriage contributes to a high divorce rate.
- Leere Netze was the feature-length debut of German-Iranian filmmaker Behrooz Karamizade, who also wrote the screenplay and directed it.
