Plot summary
Ahriman, the evil that lives in every human heart, sends his armies against the lands, and King Jamshid, who carries the light of Divine Power, beats them back. Believing the victory to be God's own, Jamshid orders his allies to hunt the survivors and take new territory, and Yazdan withdraws his glory from him. Left alone, Jamshid gives way to greed and madness. He leaves his daughter Shahrzad behind, tells the council to seat Mardas of the southern lands on the throne, and rides north with his best soldiers to hunt Ahriman. The crown passes to Mardas's only son, Zahhak, through whom darkness settles over Jamkard. In that city a boy, Afaridoon, is born to farmers, and Zahhak is troubled by dreams of a young man he once wronged.
