Plot summary
The family lives on arguments and unpaid bills. Sanctions and inflation have pushed prices past what the four brothers, Alireza, Manouchehr, Parviz and Farhad, can earn, and their sister Leila, forty, has spent her life seeing to her parents and to them. Her answer is a business of their own: a storefront in a mall bathroom that is due to be converted, and she sets out to raise the capital for it. Their father, Esmail, has a different use for the family's money. He means to give forty gold coins at a wedding and to be made the family patriarch, and he cares nothing for what his grown children want to build.

- Iran's culture ministry banned Leila's Brothers after it screened at Cannes without approval, and in August 2023 director Saeed Roustayi and producer Javad Noruzbegi were each sentenced to six months in prison by Tehran's Islamic Revolutionary Court, nine days to be served, the rest suspended over five years, plus a 24-hour course on films "aligned with national interests and national morality".
- When an assistant director on Leila's Brothers accused actor Farhad Aslani of sexual assault during filming, lead actress Taraneh Alidoosti said the rest of the cast would not stand with the accused at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival, and Aslani stayed away from Cannes.
- Actor Saeed Poursamimi went to the Cannes screening, and the well-known Iranian actress Katayoun Riahi responded by posting an Instagram photo of him on the red carpet with a red cross added, linking to the Iranian MeToo page; she said the next day she had been sexually assaulted by him 25 years earlier.
- The Cinema Organization of Iran's Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance was unhappy with Leila's Brothers because cast members made remarks critical of the Iranian government at Cannes, and Navid Mohammadzadeh kissed his wife, Fereshteh Hosseini, on the red carpet.
