Plot summary
Anabelle Leigh has been on the pageant circuit since childhood, entered by her mother Geneva, who sees a title as a way toward financial freedom. Anabelle shares a house with Geneva and her stepfather Jimmy. Elvis Moreau runs the family funeral home in the same Texas town and looks after his father Charlie, mentally handicapped for years. Elvis holds no embalming license, so Charlie is the mortician on paper, and Elvis keeps photos of the bodies he has finished. Anabelle qualifies for the nationals, and her heart stops while she is on stage. Her body is brought to the Moreau funeral home, where Elvis is starting his work.
