Plot summary
Nick writes in New York, and a posting to a bureau brings him back to Greece, the country he left as a boy and has waited thirty years to see again. What he wants is the truth about his mother, Eleni, and her death during the civil war. His search as an adult runs alongside the 1940s, when he was a boy in Lia, a remote village in the northwestern region of Epirus, where his family worked to survive on the hillside. The two plot lines run side by side, and his inquiries bring him closer to the answers he came for.
