Plot summary
Mayor Ted Garcia orders a lockdown and a mask mandate for Eddington, New Mexico, following the governor's instructions. Sevilla County Sheriff Joe Cross objects in public, and the two men, already at odds, fall out further. Joe lives with his wife Louise and her mother Dawn, who follows QAnon-style conspiracy theories. Joe decides to challenge Garcia for mayor; Garcia campaigns on a liberal, tech-positive platform that backs a large data center planned near town. Two deputies, Guy and Michael, help with Joe's campaign. Angered by his candidacy, Louise and Dawn host the conspiracist cult leader Vernon Jefferson Peak at dinner. Joe doubts Vernon's accounts of trafficking and ritual abuse; Louise says similar abuse was done to her. Garcia's teenage son Eric and his friend Brian join Black Lives Matter protests, partly to impress Sarah.

- Ari Aster wrote Eddington's script as a contemporary Western he once considered making his directorial debut, and spent about five years trying to get it made before deciding to shoot Hereditary and Midsommar first. He later updated it to be set during the COVID-19 pandemic.
- Emma Stone and Christopher Abbott were attached to star in Eddington in January 2023, with Aster also planning to work with Joaquin Phoenix again. By March 2024, Abbott was no longer attached, but Phoenix, Stone, Austin Butler and Pedro Pascal were added to the cast.
