Plot summary
Elizabeth Gilbert has a settled life, a house and a career, yet a crisis of faith leaves her feeling lost and wanting something more meaningful. She asks her husband Stephen for a divorce; while the split is settled she begins a relationship with David, an actor. It convinces her that she is her own biggest problem. A Balinese medicine man's earlier foretelling had pointed her toward a year in three places: Italy, where she studies the language and rediscovers her love of food; India, where she stays at an ashram and befriends a Texan named Richard; and Bali, where she seeks out the medicine man Ketut Liyer for further insight.
