Plot summary
Aunt Mei makes dumplings at home in Hong Kong, and middle-aged women prize them for their age-defying effect. The recipe comes from China and calls for an ingredient Mei keeps to herself. Her newest customer is Mrs. Li, a former television actress whose wealthy husband, Mr. Li, is involved with a masseuse much younger than she is. Mrs. Li wants her youth back and eats Mei's dumplings in the hope that he will find her attractive again. Mei, a gynecologist in China before she left, speaks of the many abortions she performed there. When the results come too slowly, Mrs. Li asks Mei for something more potent.
