Plot summary
Terry, a young widowed attorney in San Francisco, spends his nights watching a woman named Liz through her apartment window. After he tries to jump from the Bay Bridge, a stranger named Nick stops him. Nick, whom Terry had seen earlier in a convenience store, introduces him to Liz, then hands him sleeping pills. Terry swallows them, panics, and Nick drives him to a hospital. Furious, Terry tracks Nick down and learns that Nick is terminally ill with weeks to live. Nick proposes a trade: Terry will inherit his life insurance if he helps Nick complete his final wishes, and Nick will end Terry's life later if Terry still wants to die.
