Plot summary
Elsie Richards is a widow living alone in a bungalow; her movement is restricted and one wrist arthritic, and a care agency sends workers who wash her and keep up the house. When one of them leaves early, Colleen, a thirty-five-year-old neighbor, starts handling shopping and errands for her, and the two become friends. After Elsie loses her temper with a worker during a shower, Colleen offers to take over her care instead, and Elsie, lonely and seldom visited by family, agrees. Colleen's mother left her when she was eight, and she grew up in the care system; she gets by on state benefits and lives with a loud but gentle bull-breed dog named Saber. John, Elsie's son, hears of the arrangement and tells his mother by phone that he disapproves.
