Plot summary
In 1999, Berlin is shaken by a wave of suicides that the police cannot explain. Some people die alone, while others kill themselves in ways that take bystanders with them, and the panic spreads across both sides of the Berlin Wall. Lieutenant Claus Hartman, a West Berlin police officer, takes the case, and it touches him personally: his wife had ended her own life years earlier, soon after she learned she was pregnant. The deaths do not look like random despair to him. They point to Dr. Marsfeldt, a scientist who is believed to experiment with mass hypnosis, and Hartman takes up the search for him.
