Plot summary
Wenceslau de Moraes is a Portuguese writer and a Navy officer. He leaves his wife and family behind and settles in Macao, where he takes a Chinese wife. From Macao his path leads to Japan, and to a Japanese woman he comes to love. Around that life the film mixes the history of Portugal at home and across its colonies, and it takes its shape from The Nine Songs, nine ancient ballads by the Chinese poet Qu Yuan. Its title comes from a medieval Portuguese poem about an island that the Goddess Venus promises to Lusitanian warriors, and Isabel, also named Venus, is a character in the film.
