Antonio das Mortes (1969) on Netflix

Plot summary

After the Second World War, in the Brazilian sertão, a band of poor peasants and beatos gathers around Dona Santa, a woman they revere as a spiritual figure. With her is Coirana, who says the cangaço is reborn and speaks of avenging Lampião and the other cangaceiro martyrs, retelling the old legend of the dragon and the holy warrior as a struggle between classes. Coirana and his followers threaten Jardim de Piranhas, a town run by Coronel Horácio, an old blind cattle owner with a young wife, Laura. Dr. Mattos, the corrupt police chief, brings in Antônio das Mortes, the jagunço who killed the last of the cangaceiros twenty-nine years before, to deal with the new band.
