Plot summary
Stephens Sanitarium is a rural mental health institute where the chief doctor, Stephens, holds that insanity is best treated by letting patients act out their realities. After an elderly nurse retires, Charlotte Beale arrives; Dr. Stephens hired her a week before. Geraldine Masters, the only doctor on hand, tells her to settle in. Charlotte meets the residents: Sam, who is lobotomized and childlike and keeps a toy boat; Allyson, a schizophrenic; Jennifer, who is emotionally dependent; the octogenarian Mrs. Callingham, who recites poetry and mistakes garden flowers for her children; Danny, a prankster; a shellshocked Sergeant; and Oliver W. Cameron, a former magistrate the others call the Judge.
