Plot summary
The Po valley village is poor, its fields hard, and in the summer of 1946 its politics are split. Peppone and his Communists have just taken the majority of the council seats, and Don Camillo, the priest, answers with the church bells. The two men quarrel over everything: Peppone wants a People's House for the town, Don Camillo a Garden City for its poorest. Rich and poor, the pious and the atheists, all take sides, though the mayor and the priest admit a private regard for each other. Peppone's newborn son brings the two men into the same church. Gina Filotti comes home from boarding school and meets Mariolino, whose Communist family has long feuded with her own.
