Plot summary
Marina is twenty-three, sexually inexperienced, and works at a steel mill in a Greek town by the sea where she lives with her architect father, Spyros, who is terminally ill. Other people strike her as strange, so she avoids them and studies the species at a remove through the wildlife documentaries of David Attenborough and the music of Suicide. Bella, her only friend, gives her lessons about sex. Spyros considers the 20th century overrated and prepares for his exit from it. An engineer arrives at the steel mill for a work course and one day challenges Marina to a foosball match.
